WP Framework 0.1 is out!

This one’s a quickie because I’ve been up over 72 hours… don’t ask.

Today, I’m happy to announce that WP Framework, The Ultimate WordPress Theme Framework, is officially out and available for download.
What is it you might ask? Well if the tagline didn’t reveal too much, it’s essentially a blank WordPress theme—on steroids!

Check out the demo, see how it’s grown since day 1, or download it now and build some themes!

Still here? Hmm… your probably trying to wrap your head around the steroids part. Well then let me further elaborate what WP Framework actually is.

It’s a development theme. A theme that gets out of your way and let’s you focus on the good stuff—Site Specific Features.

That’s really all there is to say right now as WP Framework is only in it’s first release stages (release early, release often!). Like I said during one of my little brainstorming sessions, expect to see A LOT more “goodies” in the upcoming releases. I was just laying the foundation down for this release, I can’t wait to show you what I’ve really got in store for WP Framework!

Download? I just hit svn up and got the new version. Now, I’m off to play around with it.

Am I correct that this is a blank theme with no CSS, so that designers can simply create CSS to suit the HTML? If so, you may want to look at putting some more DIV tags in there as it will be a bit too tricky to do the more complicated layouts without them.

Have you seen ‘Semantic WordPress’ by Dan Schulz? He was working on building a solid base theme for developers to work from. Progress stopped on it a while ago and I’m not sure if he’s got back into it again yet.

I’m working on a similar (well, sort of) project at the moment too.

Care to highlight how this is different from Sandbox?

@Ryan – thanks for the suggestion Ryan. I’m aware of the limited possibilities WP Framework might impose due to its HTML structure, but in future versions, WPF won’t have that kind of limitation. It’ll be HTML agnostic.

And I’ve never heard of Dan Schulz or his Semantic WordPress framework. You have a link for that? And I would love to check out what you’ve got in the making, there’s always room for more of these types of projects.

@Richard Spencer Davies – thanks man, tell me how it works out for you!

@Ozh – Depending on how you look at it, it’s completely different or it’s a continuation from where Sandbox choose to stop. WPF helps theme authors build themes faster and more efficient. If it had served that need, I wouldn’t have started WPF. The difference might not be apparent right now. But as WPF starts to evolve, that differentiation will be clearly visible. Once I get back from Europe, I’m going to be finishing up on version 0.2, which will probably make things more confusion :) .

Sorry, I don’t have a link at hand. Dan is an advisor over at SitePoint.com. I’ll PM him a link to this page so he can fill you in on the details himself.

Ryan’s referring to a WordPress Theme Framework I’ve been tinkering with for the past year and a half. Production stopped due to computer problems (as anyone on SitePoint.com would probably be willing to tell you), but is expected to resume shortly (I hope).

As for a link, it’ll be released when it’s ready – not before then (though I am willing to make exceptions in a few cases).

@SE7EN – that was already planned. it’ll be available once version 0.2 comes out. TBA

@Ryan, thanks for going out of your way to contact dan! @Dan, I sent you an email :)
